Last time I reviewed "The Long Tail", a book, introducing a new marketing concept, which would allow you to create a produc that sells well on the Internet. The MindValley Way, in turn, explains thoroughly how best to sell the product.

Personal opinion

My first impression of the book that it has covered all the aspects of increasing sales from a website. While the book doesn't necessarily give you any on-page SEO tips or ways to promote your site, you can certainly learn how to boost your sales after you have created and optimized your site and started promoting it.

The Mind Valley Way should be a good read in addition to what you can find on my blog. It covers not only how to write great content, but also ways to manage your sales force efficiently to get more customers.

One of the interesting aspects of the book is that you can use the advice given in the book immediately after or during reading it. The Mind Valley Way is filled with tips you can implement immediately to see instant improvements in conversions. That's why it is suitable for the beginners as well. In fact, the book should be most recommended to the beginners.

The amazing thing - and it is the real gem of the book - is that all guidelines have been tested before they were recommended. You get to see not only the examples of efficient ad text, but also the real numbers of how the improvements affected the ad efficiency.

If you are really into squeezing everything from your website to get more sales, than the book is for you. It is a one-stop resource for anyone, wanting to get more sales with easy steps.

Is the book for me?

From the looks of it, the following people can benefit from the book:

online (e-commerce, retail) shop owners

service providers (B2B, B2C service providers)

absolutely anyone managing a PPC campaign

a one person site owner, wishing to get more conversions (sales, sign-ups, etc)

a beginner online marketer to learn most of the conversion magic at once

an advanced Internet marketer to learn yet more tips to advance in his way to ultimate knowledge

a SEO to complement his/her knowledge and experience (to be more effective and get a higher salary)

someone managing a website (a site manager, a web designer/developer)

a web designer to learn new skills to create better websites (and raise his/her fees)

You can receive free 40 tactics from the book itself to get a glimpse of what is inside.

Should I buy the book?

Of course, anyone interested in getting more customers should buy the Mind Valley Way book.

If you don't want to spend the money, consider spending months to learn website optimization

However, if you value your time and want to learn the tips to boost your conversions, buy the book now

you get free site accessment (one hour consultation) by the book authors worth $997. Supposedly, they'll tell you how to best to improve your site and implement the book advice

And you can get your money back, if:

you don't boost your sales by 500% in 90 days

you find a better e-commerce book

Looks like a worthy investment to me. If I didn't know how to sell myself and I wanted to learn it fast, I'd buy the book for sure (even considering our average salaries of $300).

Another thing is this. I am an online marketer and I know when I am sold to and can smell any false hype from a mile away. These guys only tell you what you can get by following the advice from the book and that's based on two years of research.

Receive the free 40 tactics from the e-book, apply them to your site and profit.

Weeks (!) ago I was sent one of the first hundred, not for distribution, copies of "The Long Tail" for a promise to post its review in a blog post. After numerous short reading sessions, the promise is finally fulfilled. Behold the review of "The Long Tail" by Chris Anderson.

The book

First, the book itself. It is a medium formatted, soft-cover book of 226 pages. The font is easy to read and book paper is pleasant to handle. But the contents is what makes it a book, right?

The background

In case you haven't heard of The Long Tail yet, here is some background:

it all started from an article in the Wired magazine

the concept of The Long Tail takes into account the lesser known products, which there are many more than hits

there also is a blog, The Long Tail, where the book and the concept is discussed (ran by Chris Anderson, of course)

The content

In general, the book seems to be the detailed version of the Wired article. It starts by explaining the nature of popular products (hits) and less popular products (the Tail). Then it comes down to the origin of the Long Tail, gives several detailed examples and also covers marketing effects of the Long Tail.

It also describes how the Long Tail principle has existed and changed our life. There are a couple of chapters on how the Long Tail approach helps businesses and the future of the Long Tail.

Basically, any information you need or an answer to a question you want to ask about the Long Tail, can be found in the book.

Personal opinion

What interested me was not only a very in-depth, precise description of the Long Tail principle, but also marketing implications of the Long Tail. For instance, the author explains not only why the Long Tail appeared, but also how anyone can ride the wave in the new market.

For instance, the book answered the question that always interested me: does the Long Tail add customers or evenly distribute them over product sales, or both? Naturally, the book also answers other similarly intricate questions in great detail.

In my opinion, the Long Tail concept, namely the fact of announcing it worldwide, has given a great impact to the markets in a positive direction. I am quite sure innovative marketers started thinking of new ways of developing and marketing products, because, frankly, I was doing that while reading the book.

The book is not just informational, it is mind changing. Once you read about the Long Tail concept, your views on the world economy and market will never be the same - you will have a deeper look and a wider reach on the nature of things.

Questions

To be more precise, you'll know the answers to following questions once you read the book:

what is "The Long Tail"?

why the Long Tail appeared?

how does the Long Tail affect me?

will the Long Tail help me grow my business?

what product do I need to develop to market with the Long Tail?

will my business survive if I don't follow the Long Tail?

what is the role of consumers in the Long Tail?

is it just a buzz or a constant? or both?

was this book worth buying?

Of course, the above questions are what I remembered, but there are many more answers in the books to unlimited number of questions that may arise.

Final question

Now you may be thinking. Is the book worth reading or not?

I won't tell you a thing - you need to decide for yourself. But if you are serious about marketing, you should consider learning the Long Tail concept, because this is the path to go by in the nearest marketing future.

You can go to Amazon to read reviews of other people and/or buy the book.

P.S. "How does this relate to websites?" you may think. Trust me, it does.

There are a lot of books about search engine optimization on the market. Most of them are aimed at making some quick cash, while publishing some old techniques that no longer work, some just describe real basics. But there is a small number of those, which can teach you the principles of solid SEO, which will help you to stay afloat forever. SEO book, by Aaron Wall of seobook.com, is one of them.

Overview

You get the SEO book by downloading it from the link, which you receive after payment. It is a PDF file of 300+ pages and you can navigate to sections by clicking on them in the contents list in the beginning of the book (also by entering the page number in the bottom of the Adobe Photoshop page and by scrolling).

The book is structured in such a way, so you can start reading and learn the most useful information from the start. Further chapters explain everything you need to know in more detail. However, it should be recommended to not only read the book completely, but to re-read from time to time, as you'll be able to absorb newer information on each reading session.

Generally, you will learn:

what SEO is

how to build a site (content, structure, etc)

how to promote a site (social media, links, PPC, affiliates etc)

which tools to use, when working on your site

how to buy or sell SEO services

You'll get a complete and honest description of any SEO related topic from a SEO expert - something you hoped to find on forums, blogs or in other books. In each chapter you will find some advice, a real life example and a couple of links to learn more about the topic.

It should probably be better to read the book slowly, while checking the corresponding moments with your site. This way, you should see exactly what Aaron was talking about and will be able to reap the fruits of the book quite early.

You'll be walked from basic SEO stuff to more intricate moments of creating, improving and promoting your website. You'll learn all the vital points of website creation, thus enabling you to make your own decisions about the site.

As a bonus, you get a couple more PDFs to read, including interviews with prominent search industry figures and such (like just getting a great book for under $300 - $79 to be exact - is not enough).

Personal opinion

It was absolutely refreshing to finally read a book that spoke real truth about search engine optimization. There is only the clear advice on how best to act in your site situation, no hype or SEO myths you'd waste your time on involved.

Even as I didn't learn anything new from the book, it still reminded me to pay more or less attention to certain things on the projects. Probably, any book, audio or a conference should give such an effect, and the SEO book is no exception.

Another thing I liked about the book is that it is written in a simple language and tone - clearly helpful for the novice site owners. Another moment is that the book is updated quite frequently and you can get the updates forever for free (once you buy the book, that is).

How to read the SEO book

To get out the most out of the book, you need to:

take your time - try to understand (digest) the information, if something is not clear

check your site and see how you can apply a certain technique from the book to it, while reading the book, if you know what you are doing (after the "Why I haven't done it before!?" moment)

re-read the book from time to time, once you have run through your site and recheck your site, again

I'd keep the book open in Acrobat for days, when working on a site. It can be a good reference on what to do next with your website.

Reasons to read the SEO book

Regardless of your SEO knowledge level, you may want to read the SEO book, because:

you'll learn or be reminded of all the aspects on how to make your site popular with the people and the search engines

you'll know the latest and the most efficient trends on the SEO industry right from a SEO expert

you'll be able to learn and do anything you need about your website yourself

Now, if you have been studying the search industry for several years and live and breathe the Web (and Web 2.0), you may not learn something new, but your thoughts surely will become more focused on the customers and how SEO ties in there.

Rounding up

When there is a huge amount of information available online, it is important to make sure you only use the most efficient ways to improve your website and get noticed. With SEO book, you can get just the right advice to get you going in the right direction, no matter, if you are a recent site owner or a learning SEO professional.

If you are new to improving your website and getting more visibility or want to sharpen your skills and knowledge or just to become more confident in your skills, then the SEO book should be a good read for you.
